Why doesn't your macrame look like on Pinterest? The most common beginner mistakes
You start your adventure with braiding, buy your first strings, start the tutorial and... the end result is slightly different from the ideal? Don't worry! Every handicraft enthusiast has experienced crooked weaves and tangled ends. As a manufacturer of cotton strings, we see hundreds of jobs and know where the problem usually lies.
Here is a list of the most common mistakes that may hinder your development in the world of macrame.
1. Wrong type of string selected for the project
This is mistake number one. In our outlet you will find three main types of strings and each has a different purpose:
-
Braided string: It is stiff and stable. Perfect for beginners because the weaves don't run away. However, it cannot be combed into fashionable fringes.
-
Macrame string (single twisted): Soft, flexible, can be combed beautifully. However, it requires greater precision because it is easier to accidentally unscrew it during work.
- Macrame string (triple twisted): It consists of three separate strands woven together, which gives your works a unique texture and durability. Perfect for swings or large flower beds
Tip: Want to make a leaf or fringe? Choose single-twisted string. Do you want to make a flower stand or a bag? Choose 3mm or 5mm braided string.
2. Knot tightening too weak (or too tight)
Uneven knots make macrame wavy or crooked. If you tighten one knot as hard as you can and loose the other, the pattern will lose its geometry.
Tip: Try to keep a steady rhythm. If you feel your hands are going numb, you're doing it too hard! Macrame should be flexible, not hard as a stone.
3. String sections too short
Nothing is more irritating than missing 10 cm of string to finish the last row. Beginners often forget that weaves eat up the length of the fabric very quickly (up to 4 times the length of the final project).
Tip: Always add 20-30% extra. Remember that in our store we offer strings at attractive outlet prices, so it's worth cutting a little more than stressing about the lack of material halfway through.
4. Ignoring string thickness
Trying to make small jewelry from 5mm string or large wall macrame from thin 1.5mm thread is rarely successful. The thickness of the string determines the scale of your work.
5. Lack of patience when combing
Do you use a regular comb and tug on the string? This is the easiest way to destroy the structure of cotton. Our macrame string is natural and soft, but requires proper treatment.
Tip: Invest in a metal macrame comb and comb the ends in layers, starting from the bottom.
Summary
Mistakes are a natural part of learning. The most important thing is to work with good material that forgives imperfections. We invite you to browse through our end-of-series and production surpluses - there you will find high-quality strings in colors that will inspire you for your next project!
