A large toy basket, an XXL shopper bag, a pouffe, or maybe a string carpet?
When it comes to larger projects, one question always arises: how much string should you buy so that you don't run out... but also don't have half a closet of supplies left?

Estimating material consumption does not have to be difficult. You just need to know a few simple rules.

1. Make a sample - this is the basis

The most reliable method is to make a small sample , e.g. 10 × 10 cm.

How to do it?

  1. Make a sample with the selected stitch.

  2. Weigh it (e.g. on a kitchen scale).

  3. Calculate how many such fragments will fit in your project.

Example:
If a 10 × 10 cm sample weighs 40 g and your basket will have an area equivalent to 20 such samples - you will need approximately 800 g of string.

This is the most accurate method, especially when working with recycled cotton strings.

2. Remember that the stitch matters

Material consumption depends on:

  • type of stitch (double crochets will use more than half crochets),

  • accuracy of work,

  • crochet size,

  • string thickness (3 mm, 5 mm, 9 mm etc.).

The more openwork the pattern, the less consumption.
The tighter the work, the bigger.

3. Calculate the volume for spatial projects

For large baskets, pouffes or bags, it is worth estimating:

  • bottom diameter,

  • height,

  • wall thickness.

A basket with a diameter of 30 cm and a height of 30 cm can use up to 800-1200 g of 5 mm string - depending on the stitch.

? Always add 10-15% extra. It's better to have one more bobbin than to look for the same color batch later.

4. Check the experiences of other creators

If you use a ready-made pattern, the designer usually provides approximate consumption.

If you are creating your own project:

  • check similar projects,

  • ask the craft community,

  • compare dimensions with finished products.

This is especially important for larger orders or work "for sale".

5. Color and wear – what is worth remembering?

For two-color or multi-color designs:

  • specify the proportions (e.g. 70% base, 30% accent),

  • plan color changes in advance,

  • remember that the joints may slightly increase wear.

If you are creating a series of products, it is worth recording the exact consumption after the first item. This makes it much easier for subsequent projects.

6. The most common errors when estimating

❌ No sample.
❌ Failure to take into account the accuracy of the work.
❌ Out of stock.
❌ Changing the crochet hook during the project.

Large projects require a plan - improvisation often ends in additional costs.

Why is a good estimate so important?

  • you save money,

  • you don't generate unnecessary leftovers,

  • you can price your product more precisely,

  • you work more calmly and confidently.

When working with recycled cotton strings, this has additional importance - conscious planning means less waste and more responsible handicraft.

Summary

To accurately estimate material consumption for a large project, make a sample, take into account the type of stitch and always add allowance. Planning is the key to calm work and a professional effect - especially when dealing with large baskets, bags or string pouffes.
