How to store strings to avoid waste?
Handicraft is creativity, peace and creating things that will last for years. But... it's also easy to create chaos and unnecessary waste - especially when it comes to storing strings. Foils, plastic boxes, disposable packaging are rapidly multiplying, but is there any other way?
Below you will find practical, zero waste (or low waste) ways to store strings that are aesthetic, functional and planet-friendly.
1. Use what you already have
Before you buy new organizers, take a look around your home. Often the best solutions are at hand:
-
cardboard shoe or parcel boxes
-
old chest of drawers
-
wicker or fabric baskets
-
coffee jars and cans (ideal for smaller skeins or tips)
➡️ Tip: You can cover cardboard boxes with kraft paper or newspaper - they will look consistent and aesthetic.
2. Plastic-free storage
If you want to reduce plastic to a minimum, choose natural materials:
-
cotton bags or linen bags
-
wooden boxes
-
cardboard tubes (e.g. paper towels)
-
fabric organizers
The strings "breathe", they do not electrify and do not collect as much dust as in plastic.
3. Roll up instead of loose
Loosely placed strings get tangled and damaged more quickly. A better solution is:
-
winding the string into skeins or eights
-
using cardboard boxes (e.g. cut from packaging)
-
tying the ends with a cotton ribbon or a piece of string
It's not only tidy, but also less material waste .
4. Sort to avoid waste
Good organization = less waste. It is worth sorting the strings by:
-
color
-
thickness
-
type (cotton, recycled, polyester)
-
purpose (macrame, crochet, accessories)
This will make it easier to use up leftovers and you won't buy more skeins "because you didn't remember you already had a similar color."
5. Leftovers have value too
The ends of the strings often end up in the trash, which is a big mistake. You can use them for:
-
key rings
-
tassels
-
small decorations
-
weave samples
-
packing orders or gifts
Store leftovers in one place - e.g. in a jar or cloth bag.
6. Visible storage = conscious use
If you have space, keep the strings in view:
-
on open shelves
-
in baskets
-
on hangers or bars
Seeing inventory makes it easier to plan projects and avoid overproduction and unnecessary purchases.
7. Less packaging, more responsibility
If you run a handicraft workshop or shop:
-
give up foil for paper
-
use reusable packaging
-
encourage customers to reuse packaging
Small changes make a big difference?
Summary
Storing strings in the spirit of zero waste is:
-
using what we already have
-
reduce plastic
-
good organization
-
conscious use of leftovers
It's not only care for the environment, but also greater comfort of creation and an aesthetic work space.
If you want to create beautiful things and at the same time act more responsibly - start by tidying up your strings?
